I turned 36 earlier this month. I'm all too aware of the fact that I have a finite number of years left to skateboard where I can ollie up on the big ledges for 50-50s and do nollie flips on flat. Therefore I try to skate as much as I can. Whenever I call my friend Paul in Rochester he always says that he hasn't been skating in forever because he has been running a lot. I bug him that he should be skateboarding since he's only a couple months younger than me. Anyway, all this running is being put to a good use. He's going to run in the Buffalo Marathon on Sunday. Good luck, buddy. I still say you should have been skateboarding instead.

Race was a wheel company done by Think. They weren't afraid to use non-skating ads either from time to time. The team included Eric Ricks, Karma Tsocheff and other assorted Think riders.

Eben was a DC local who rode for Experience at some point.

Dave was pro for New Deal and Media in the 1990s. He had a smooth style with lots of clean flip tricks. I watched his part from Children Of The Sun on YouTube yesterday. I also watched 411 #2 and Dave had a lot of footage in that as well.

Barry "Twist" McGee did a lot of the early art for Mad Circle.

I find it interesting that back when I was in college my art professors didn't really know about all the skateboard artists beyond me telling them how awesome they were. Now one of the art history professors at the college teaches a class on the urban/suburban/street/graffiti/whatever you want to call artists. This is cool, but at the same time, key figures like Ed Templeton, Andy Jenkins, Neil Blender and maybe Mark Gonzales are being left out. That's like talking about the history of the NBA and not mentioning Jerry West. I'm just complaining without any real point. I make my students look at Abstract Expressionism, Dada, Surrealism and Pop. You know, the old arty farty crap.

I know nothing about Eddie. Sucks that your only coverage ever might have been a lousy video grab sequence.

Some follow up on ATM & 60/40:

ATM rebranded with Mike Manzoori, Mario Rubalcaba, etc. in May 1994.

There are a couple of ATM ads that look like somebody was trying to rip off the Gonz's art from late 1993/early 1994. I'm not sure if they were, but it doesn't have the authentic Gonz feel. It's entirely possible that Mark drew on or with something that was hard to reproduce. Given that 60/40 would start a couple of months later, this does make things rather suspect.

60/40 started in April 1994.
Based on ads in Transworld, Kools went from June 1994 to November 1994.

Both 60/40 and Kools were backed by Richard Metiver (Union).
Gonz was still on 60/40 as of November 1995.
I haven't checked past that, although he would have switched to Real shortly.

RIP Arthur Phillips.

At some point in the late 1980s I became friends with Jay and Paul, twin brothers from the next town over, because of skateboarding. We've been friends ever since. Their dad passed away on Wednesday after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. One of the things he was good at was carpentry and he helped them build a bunch of ramps, slider bars and grind boxes in their driveway.

This week is going to be about Tim Brauch and Jason Adams, two pros from San Jose who were friends. Probably just about everybody reading this knows that Tim died eleven years ago from a heart condition. They both rode for SMA in 1993. Tim would switch to Santa Cruz when SMA was ended. Jason would bounce around between Creature, Scarecrow, Sonic, Enjoi and Black Label.

I rode a lot of Consolidated boards and wheels in college. They had a deal where you could order directly from the company and it was a little bit cheaper. I've been trying to remember what boards I had exactly and the list ends up being shorter than I think it should be. I'm trying to figure out what I rode in the summers, too. I know I had a Frankie Hill barbarian, a Karma Tsocheff with the cheerleader, a Karma with an electric guitar, the Andy Roy with directions on how to throw a hand grenade, an Alan Petersen that was red and white with a small logo and an AP with an hour glass on it. I think I had a Daredevil team board with a bunch of the little devil heads on it, too. I know I go through boards faster these days because I have the money, plus with school and winters back then I wasn't skating as much.

The somewhat obscure Mr. Seliner. Daredevil Wheels was the name Consolidated used for their wheels and bearings.

This has turned into Consolidated Week #2, only without the organization of the first time.

In regards to non-Consolidated issues:

Jake Donnelly and Dan Plunkett are on the am invite list for for the Maloof Money Cup in Flushing Meadows. It's nice to see a couple of Buffalo guys get a shot at a big time event. Maybe one of them can do what the Sabres and Bills fail to do: win something.

(For any Mets' fans out there, their Triple A affiliate Buffalo Bisons are actually winning some games now.)

There's also a guy named Shawn Hale from Joplin, Missouri on the invite list. Having spent some time at Bemo's/BTB back when I was living in Arkansas, there's always going to be soft spot in my heart for anybody from that corner of the Show Me State. I could go for some Pizza By Stout right now.
