Paul Sharpe #3.

For all the kids out there that think Leo Romero is the first guy to grind up a handrail, he wasn't. Paul Sharpe wasn't either, but he gets to be in the Going Up Club. Other members include Jeremy Wray, Ed Templeton, probably Natas and I bet at least one rider for Shut ground or railslide the wrong way once. These are the first ones I could think of off the top of my head. Feel free to include others or make corrections.

Also Foundation was one of the first companies to embrace the internet. Although it is hard to read because of the small type size and color choice, their website and email are listed in the fine print.

Darren's been with Creature for a long time. Granted there was that gap of a few years when NHS put the name on hold and he rode for 151, but otherwise it's Creature or nothing. It's got to be really cool to ride for a company with friends you've been skating with for over twenty years.

Dave is a Minnesota vert ripper who was one of the first to start doing switch tricks on the big ramps. This is relevant at the time because of the emergence of riding switch in street skating. He rode for SMA prior to Goodtimes.

I got my copy of Stay Gold on Friday. Apparently the DVD is smarter than I am because Heath's part is hidden above the credits on the disc menu section. If I had paid more attention to the You Will Soon review I might not have spent the weekend wondering where the hell it was. This was easier back in the day with VHS where you would just have to fast forward after the credits to find the hidden part.

Anyway, Stay Gold is worthy of all the praise it has been receiving. My only complaint is that they stuck Ed Templeton, Chris Senn, Ben Krahn and Marisa Del Santo in the credits. That should have been in with the rest of video. Ed and Senn have helped build the company into what it is today. And then you have Ben Krahn, who is freaking awesome and should get a lot more coverage. The guy probably doesn't care all that much, but still. More Ben, less other stuff.

I'm a firm believer in the idea of Leo Romero for SOTY, but after watching Reynold's part, I don't know.

Shelter Serra.

It's a Fine Art Friday.

Any skater who does printmaking, and especially etchings, gets props from me.

Shelter's uncle is noted minimalist sculptor Richard Serra. His father is attorney Tony Serra, who happens to be quite a bit of a character. Use the Google to see what I mean in case you don't know anything about him.

Shellac were awesome. Over in that long list of links is one for my Tumblr. (Two hints: it's in the J's and uses my full name.) At some point this weekend I'll post three photos from the show. I know that Chrome Ball has used Shellac song titles to label posts, so I figure there might be some interest.

Karma Tsocheff #5.

I set up a new board last night. For the first time in fourteen years, it's a Consolidated deck. A Karma Tscocheff deck to be exact. The wood looks good and the top is a black stain that allows the grain to show through. The last three boards I've had have been in this color and I'm liking it.

I intended to go skate for a little bit, but that didn't happen because I couldn't find any razor blades. I still get anything I order shipped to my parents' house because they are both retired and I know somebody will be there when the UPS driver shows up. I met up with my folks after work for dinner at a mediocre national chain restaurant and then swung by their house to get my board and read the newspaper. I wanted to grip it then, but I couldn't find any new razor blades. I swear my dad has a phobia about buying new blades and keeps using the same old paint covered ones. I thought I still had some at my apartment. Nope. I needed some milk and went to the grocery store around the corner. They surprisingly did not carry razor blades. I took the milk home and then headed back out to the hardware store. Finally I got some blades and was able to set up my new board. By the time I was done, it was about 8:30 PM. I guess I could have gotten a couple more days out of my old board, but I wanted to ride a new deck. Tonight.
