Sal Barbier #2.

You gotta love the vintage helmet.

This photo is from the fifth Back To The City contest in San Francisco. It happened over Labor Day weekend in 1993. Matt Beach won, Wade Speyer took second and Phil Shao was third.

Does Sal's board seem a little odd? It's completely black without any scratches beyond some very minor roughness around the nose. (Sal is goofy footed for the record.)

Rick Kosick took the photo.

When the photo would have been taken, Girl wouldn't have been around. Rick and Mike probably would have been serious about planning it.

However, by the time the photo ran everybody who was leaving would have left.

Sal must have been riding some board that was easily recognizable as a disgruntled former Rocco employee's deck. When I initially started looking more closely at the photo, I was a little off on my sense of time.

Could have been a sample shape. If you watch any of the old World, Blind, Plan B, or 101 vids from those days, you saw the team riders riding blanks. I don't know the interview or from what magazine, but it was said that the pros would get boxes with sample shapes; no graphics screened whatsoever. They'd ride the boards, and then tell Rodney Mullen what they liked, what they didn't and what changes should be made.

I was thinking it was probably a sample shape, but something about it just doesn't look right. I'm looking at the original ad to make sure I didn't do anything when I scanned it and it is really solid black.

You can see somebody else in the background with a solid black board.

It probably is a just a sample and Sal's first run of the day. No sense making something out of nothing.
