Jason Dill #5.

After Vita ceased to be, Jason switched over to DVS. He rode for them for most of the 2000s, then stopped at Etnies and is currently on Vans.

I had a pair of the Prophets shown in the ad. They were dark gray and made of something that either was leather or resembled leather. The material kind of cracked a little, presumably from me living in a place that has cold weather. They were also a little on the small side in terms of shape. My complaints aside, I liked the design.

I went on a Deluxe kick when I did my last batch of scanning. I try to keep a good variety of companies, but I sometimes get fixated on one or two specifically. Generally there isn't much of a plan as to how I scan stuff, beyond picking a year and flipping through mags from that year. Whatever catches my eye is what I go with. Most of the time.

I had posted the sequence ad of this from the first time Mark ollied Max a while back. Gabe Morford shot the photos and they didn't bother to film it in 1998. Real redid the stunt in 2001 for the Real To Reel video.

Justin Roy.

Justin was an am for Foundation with solid parts in Art Bars and The Good Times Are Killing Me videos. He turned pro when he switched over to Kris Markovich's Hollywood. I believe he was on Hellrose after that. That company did happen, right? I'm not just making it up, am I? I know that was the name of the crew they had with Don Nguyen, Richie Belton, DJ Chavez and a few others. I believe Hellrose was backed by Syndrome. Since I'm going through the stacks chronologically, I'm piecing skateboard history together in the order that it happened and I've only barely touched 2002.

Peter gets loopy.

This photo is from the Skate Park of Tampa's 2001 Tampa Pro contest. They had a loop set up with a prize of $1,500 for the first three to make it. Al Partanen and Peter Hewitt were the first two to make it around safely. Jake Brown eventually made it, too. Bob Burnquist did the loop both ways - regular and switch. Lance Mountain and SPoT owner Brian Schaefer gave it a go round, but neither was successful.

I never made a list of my favorite video parts from 2011 because I only bought the Real video and I wasn't going to count online things because I'm so spotty at watching them. I recently ordered some new shoes from SPoT and grabbed a couple of videos, too. I got Shake Junt's Chicken Bone Nowison and Foundation's WTF. WTF is a nice little flick. It's not the days of Fowler, Kris Markovich, Justin Strubing, Jon West and company, but it is fun to watch. There's no fancy cinematography, just street skating and punk rock. Dan Murphy kills it. I might miss Josh Beagle, but the Circle F is in good hands still.

I always liked the older Volcom ads. Remy Stratton was coming up with some interesting layouts.

The sequence is from a 2000 tour of the Midwest and surrounding areas. A couple of my friends went to the stop in Columbia, Missouri. I was finishing up the thesis for my master's degree so I wasn't able to go. I think the demo was at an indoor skatepark that wasn't open yet to the general public. I don't remember much of what my friends said went down for some reason. This story is going nowhere.

I'd like to apologize to Pat that your first appearance on Vert Is Dead is for this lame company. Pyro was a fly by night shoe outfit that did not last long in 2001. Pancho Moler was the other team rider.

Billy was riding for the Firm and Etnies in 2001. His first ad ever might have been for a regrettable truck sponsor, but let's not go there. Billy would soon get on Toy Machine and he's been with them ever since. He also rides for Fallen. I had a couple or three pairs of his shoe and I liked them. They were a cupsole with a reasonable amount of padding around the toe area, hint hint shoe companies.

Ben was one of the new guys on Black Label at the turn of the millennium, along with Adam Alfaro, Patrick Melcher and Jason "Jub" Taylor. He crushed a lot of very long handrails. Ben currently rides for Zero and is a motorcycle enthusiast.

It's going to be stuff from 2001 for the next five weeks or so. I figure I might as well start with Florida's Joel Meinholz since he just dropped a cool video part for Hopps. Joel hauls ass down a parking garage and does a bunch of 50-50s with a nollie kickflip thrown in for good measure.

Rene was a staple of the New Deal team in the 90s with solid tech tricks and plenty of style. He currently has a clothing company called FITTED in Honolulu, Hawaii.
