Remember when skateboarding on TV was a big deal and you had to watch it? Sure doesn't feel that way today. I miss the old contest stories from Thrasher and Big Brother. The Thrasher ones were probably a little better because that was back when they still kept things vague about the partying and hi-jinx. It's nice to know all the details, but at the same time, it's better to leave a little mystery.
I recently saw Bucky and a bunch of other bowl shredders flying around in a televised contest in Maryland. I'm not positive what series it was for, other than it was definitely on NBC. Anyway, getting past my apathy, it's cool to see Bucky beating kids half his age in contests, all those years after the old Powell Peralta videos.

Seeing Bucky Lasek still ripping is awesome. And I don't begrudge him or any pros who have been skating and progressing since the early '90s getting checks from companies nobody would consider remotely "core." Bucky kept at it when monthly checks were probably hundreds of dollars, and winning a contest brought maybe $1,000.
And when I now see a vert contest from the X Games, I can't say I know who half the guys are, let alone know who they ride for, or if they even have a pro model.

I'm not sure what the board sponsorship situation is for a lot of the guys that skate the contests. I've got a general grasp of the names. I know some of them ride for smaller board companies, which is cool.
