Chad Muska #2.

The Muska was discovered by Thomas Campbell and company on trip to Las Vegas that was chronicled in the December 1993 issue of Transworld. Muska was soon sponsored by G & S and appeared in an ad that is too gray to scan. He moved over to Maple in the post - G & S world. By the end of 1995, he was on Toy Machine and poised to become one of the super stars of the late 1990s.

The photo is by Vien Kettavong.

Panama Dan & Satva Leung.

In the top photo we have a swarthy Panama Dan heelflipping a gap and below we see a ta-dow! Satva Leung switch frontside flipping a sidewalk gap.

Do what you want and tell everyone else to suck your ass!

Phsyco Killer.

Cut your arm off now!

You gotta love how the Tempster fills in the empty space.

Like I've said before, I've been on a big Toy Machine video watching spree. What was Panama Dan's last name?

Speaking of videos, if you buy a copy of the new issue of the Skateboard Mag, you get a DVD with the Dylan Rieder video on it.

Children of the Grave.

Be sure to head over to the Chrome Ball Incident for a great interview with Jason Dill.

Tim Upson #2.

The Updog was pro for Black Label and Anti-Hero. He kind of vanished within the last few years.

I watched the Dylan Rieder "Man Crush" video last night. That kid is on another level. I also watched his part in Mind Field before I went to bed. He was good in that, but nothing compared to the new Gravis footage. I'm not feeling the v-neck t-shirts, but that's the only thing he's doing wrong. He also does probably the biggest impossible ever. Ed Templeton must be proud.

Max Schaaf #4.

In keeping with yesterday's burning/flame/explosion theme.

This is at Max's ramp before the huge Gonz mural was painted on the wall. It looks so empty without it. I type that as if I'm a local there or something. I'm not even close. It's kind of crazy how you end up knowing details about skateboarders you've never met.

Holy crap, skateboard news happened:

Heath Kirchart retiring? Bummer.

Mark Appleyard off Flip? Probably a change for the better. Maybe just a change.

Jeff Grosso leaving Black Label? It doesn't seem right. Somebody should make a new brand called Awesome Old Guy Company* that has Grosso, Lance Mountain, Chris Miller and Ray Barbee for the team.

* But come up with a better name than that.

Justin Strubing.

Justin is an underrated all terrain shredder. He's been around for a long time and several sponsors - Santa Cruz, Adrenalin, Foundation, whatever Matt Mumford's short lived Dwindle backed company was (Legacy?) and finally back on the Dot. His park lines in the Foundation tour video The Good Times Are Killing Me are great.

Phil Shao #7.

“I hardly knew him, besides shooting with him. But, you could tell he was super nice. Even though we weren’t close, we had a good talk; he was a student and not your average stoner/skateboarder guy. He actually hurt his knee on the trick in the photo. He twisted his knee and just lay on the ground and said, ‘Oh no, I’m messed up.’” - Grant Brittain

Phil was an all around ripper who passed away twelve years ago in a car accident. He rode for Think, Venture and Emerica.

Skip Pronier #2.

Countdown to the weekend. I just discovered that there is a premium and craft beer store right by where I work. I mean I sort of knew about it already, but had never figured out exactly where it was, partly because it doesn't look like a beer store from the outside and it blended in with the other shops on the boardwalk.

This has been sitting on the hard drive for over a year. It's time to post it now.

1995 & Phil Shao on Monday.

Big Bro Rick Kosick snapped the photo.

Jason Rothmeyer #2.

Jason was back on Santa Cruz in 1994 after riding for Acme and Foundation.

Following Santa Cruz, he rode for and was the team manager for Nation. It was owned by Strength Magazine in Cincinnati. Steffan Attardo, Jake Brown, Jason King, James Riff and Panama Dan all were sponsored by Nation at one point or another.

Ed Templeton #9.

Is this guy going to have a part in Stay Gold?

I've been watching the old Toy Machine videos again. They make me miss the early 1990s.

Bringing back the 1992 slappy nose slides on a curb.

Sunfish Holy Breakfast.

Work's been hella busy. I need to scan some new stuff. Therefore you get obscure GBV references instead of any sort skateboarding related history.

Oh, wait, is Planet Earth back in business?

Fire on the mountain.

There was also a sequence of this trick included as a flip book with a Deluxe catalog. I think I've still got it...somewhere. I've been meaning to dig up some of the 'zines and catalogs that companies made from this time frame. Maybe in the next week or two.

Jahmal Williams.

Jahmal is from Boston and has ridden for Television, Toy Machine, American Dream Unit, Infamous and even the Wu-Tang Clan's short lived skateboard company. These days he's doing Hopps and making art. There's a new Hopps commercial with Jerry Fowler over at the Skateboard Mag's website.

Biebel's World is now live. I bet that would be a fun place to visit.

Dan Drehobl #9.

Dan is my favorite pro.

Nice to see they finally posted the damage to Ben's office over at Tha Tap. I've been waiting for that.

For clarification purposes from yesterday, Brian Howard did turn pro for G & S. This would have been at the same time as when Willy Santos was starting to blow minds.

Brian Howard.

"Brian Howard having fun (because its o.k. to do that now)"

Brian was an am for G & S and then turned pro for Planet Earth. Besides being a smooth vert skater, he had a few street moves here and there that were showcased in Planet Earth ads. I seem to remember a nose slide down the ledge on the side of the stairs at the Brooklyn Banks.

Back to work now.

Al Partanen.

Al is one of my favorite skaters. That's it. No sponsor history or trying to describe how good he is. Whatever I thought about typing sounded lame. Al rips.

Beer City is a company out of Milwaukee that started in 1993. In addition to making skateboards, they are a hardcore and punk record label. They sponsored some of the locals as well as Duane Peters. Beer City is still going today.

Pete D. took the photo.

Ron Knigge #2.

Hey, look at this. It's a rare Saturday post. There's no way to talk about the New Deal from 1994 without having Ron Knigge. He even got me to like Buffalo Tom a little.

Dave Duren #2.

"Dave Duren is amazing and shit."

Children Of The Sun week was somewhat requested by Jason Rothmeyer. He also wanted to see some Firm. I've been trying to get the Firm on here, but a lot of their ads wouldn't reproduce very well. It's on the list of things to do.

There is a very slight chance I will post Ron Knigge over the weekend. I figure you can't have a New Deal week from 1994 without Ron. I've got a good bunch of stuff planned for next week, too.

The new issue of Thrasher seems good so far. My philosophy on Thrasher is that the more Michael Burnett, Wez Lundry and Michael Sieben, the better. Nothing against any of the other writers or photographers, but I'm playing favorites here. Burnett delivers two tour stories and an interview with Leo Romero.

After leaving Blind and the virtually nonexistent Family project, Jordan did some time at the New Deal. He had a few tricks at the end of Children Of The Sun.

Rene Matthyssen.

Smooth and stylish rider from Hawaii. I think he sort of vanished after the New Deal got rid of their pro team in the mid 1990s. I'm pretty sure that Rene is still doing skateboard related stuff back on the island.

Chris Ortiz was the photographer.

John Montesi #2.

It's been super busy at work today. I almost didn't think I'd have time to update. My boss has been showing me how to use the giant camera for shooting from paste ups along with showing me how to strip film and burn plates for printing.

I forgot to mention yesterday that this is Children Of The Sun week and will feature New Deal riders from that video.

Neal Hendrix #2.

I went to the mall yesterday. I normally won't buy anything at a mall skateshop, but as I was walking around I discovered that a Zumiez had opened. I initially thought it was another Pac Sun and that registered as odd so I had to investigate. I wound up buying the Zero Strange World video for twelve dollars. I don't feel too bad about that.

RVCA is now carried at Pac Sun. I bought two t-shirts because I need some new clothes. If I had looked at the prices, I wouldn't have bought them to begin with. I didn't realize it would be that much until the clerk rang me up and asked for forty bucks. Whoops. I feel bad about that. You get used to ordering t-shirts with the discount for three or more. I expected those numbers to carry over into the real world. I should have known better.

Vert Is Dead: not keeping it core on one Sunday in August.
