Jason Adams #3.
Happy Halloween.
This is going out to Old School Sammy and is the first Creature ad. Jason was riding for Santa Monica Airlines prior to Creature. When NHS put SMA on the shelf and moved most of the team to Santa Cruz, Jason went with Ross Pope's new venture. After the break up that led Pope to starting Scarecrow, Jason opted to switch instead of sticking with Creature.
Well played, Chrome Ball.
Vert Is Dead will return on November 8th. It will be stuff from 1996.

Al Partanen #2.
David Gravette wasn't the first guy on Creature to jump down a big handrail. In fact, all the riders who the young kids think of as vert or park skaters these days had an ad where they were skating a handrail back in the day. Even Chet Childress.
Thanks to the Creature guys for re-linking this stuff on Facebook.
Jeff Kendall stepped off his skateboard and got behind the camera.

Darren Navarrette #2.
The Vertical Vampire with a kickflip Indy to fakie.
Creature week hasn't been too scary so far compared to what their image looks like now. The older stuff is much more classic comic book style depictions of monsters. I guess this is an example of how things evolve over time.

Barker Barrett #2.
It's Creature Week!
Creature was started in 1995 by Russ Rope and was backed by NHS. Pope wanted to do something different than what other skateboard companies were doing and went with a vintage horror and monster theme. Interestingly enough, he set up his own distribution instead of using what NHS had already established. Eventually, there were a few differences of opinion and Pope left to start Scarecrow with some of the same riders. NHS kept Creature going at that point and added some new riders.
The original team consisted of Jason Adams, Barker Barrett, Darren Navarrette, Dorian Tucker and Ronnie Marshall. This is the second ad for the company. The first was with Jason Adams.

Mathias Ringström.
Sometimes I like things that look very European.
Evol was started by Tony Magnusson after the demise of H-Street. They also made footwear. This eventually led to Osiris.
Mathias would go on to ride for World Industries and Osiris. His part in the Storm saw him doing technical tricks on vert that mimicked what the rest of the team was doing on the street. I thought his front foot impossibles were cool.
Note: There was company information along the left side of the ad that I cropped off because it was eaten up by where the pages joined together.
Niko Achtipes was the camera man.

Rick Jaramillo #2.
Based on a comment left for the first Rick Jaramillo post, he might be working for Active in shipping and receiving these days.
It also looks like Planet Earth is back in business as an eco concerned boardsports clothing company. It doesn't look like Chris Miller is involved or that they necessarily have a team.
Chris Ortiz was the photographer.

Showing DC some love. I only ever had one Capital board. It was a nice piece of wood. I think the paint was a little different, but it worked fine.
I ran out of scans that I was into and had to wait until after work to update today. I'm good for the week, but need to come up with something for next week and then piece together Creature week for Halloween.
The photographer was Pete Thompson.

The Chief rolled on Creature Wheels for a bit.
And speaking of Creature, check out the newest Burnout over at the Thrasher website. Michael Burnett posted a ton of photos from the Rumble In Ramona. It's like looking at an issue of Thrasher or Transworld from 1989 with all sorts of vert legends. Bryan Pennington, ffeJ, Al Losi, Dan Tag, Buck Smith... you get the idea. There's even 1990s vert dogs like Neil Hendrix and Rob "Sluggo" Boyce.

Tas & Ben Pappas.
Tas and younger brother Ben burst on the vert scene from Australia in the mid 1990s. They certainly made things more interesting by doing the technical tricks larger and more consistently. In a way they were a throwback to 1980s vertical characters, like Lee Ralph. Tas rode for Mad Circle and Ben was on the New Deal. They both would ride for Platinum to close out the decade.
Unfortunately, Ben's story does not have a happy ending. He had developed a serious problem with cocaine and was arrested for smuggling the drug at Melbourne Airport in Australia. He was found dead in the water off Victoria Pier in Melbourne in March of 2007. At the time of his death, he was a suspect in the murder of his girlfriend. Police were treating his death as suspicious and not necessarily as a suicide. There were similarities in how Ben and his girlfriend's bodies were found. I haven't found any updates on the case.
Tas resurfaced a few years ago after some injuries at the X Games, I think. The internet is a little vague and doesn't seem quite up to date. I believe that he won a contest in 2006.
I was a little reluctant to post this ad after initially thinking it was a cool skateboard photo, which it still is. I figure this website is somewhat of an absolute value on just the skateboarding aspect of life and not the other things that happen.
