Christian Maalouf.

Fakie flip a picnic table.

Christian is from Tempe, Arizona. He rides for WKND, Brixton, State, Wayward Wheels, and Cowtown Skateshop. WKND recently promoted him to the pro ranks. His corresponding video part was easy on the eyes and featured a lot of ollies, kickflips, and switch flips. Sometimes a simple approach is better.

Collin Provost #3.

Spillway to spillway.

Collin's got just the right style for big gaps and transitions. He makes the dangerous look effortless. I've been a fan since his part in Emerica's Made video from 2013. Collin also endorses the use of riser pads so I support that fully. Something feels wrong about having your trucks directly in contact with the board.

Ryan Lay #2.

Go jump in a lake.

Ryan is the champ of doing boardslides on uneven surfaces. His nollies are on point, too. I really liked his part in Fetish, Welcome's video from 2017. Ryan's section in Album, the new feature film from Etnies, is a strong followup.

Sage Elsesser.

Sage is from LA, but moved to Long Island for school at the age of 12. He was one of the riders Jason Dill and Anthony Van Engelen picked out for Fucking Awesome from the group that would hang out at Supreme. Their Cherry video brought the new kids to the attention of the skateboard world in 2014 and the rest is history. In addition to having the pop to get up on high ledges and ollie over street signs, Sage is going to college to study painting. That was a cool bit of information to learn about him from his recent Thrasher interview.

Kevin Rodrigues.

Strategies Against Architecture.

Kevin is from Paris, France. He turned pro for Polar a couple of years ago, but recently switched to Hockey, the skateboard company and not the ice sport. His other sponsors include Converse, Ace Trucks, and OJ Wheels. He does a lot of unique wall rides and early grabs.

Raven Tershy #3.

Airborne Couch.

Raven is another guy who had a part in Lakai's 2017 video The Flare I really liked. He crushes all types of ramps, pools, and bowls.

I finally set up a new pair of trucks last night. It went less awkwardly than I expected. Although it is a little weird seeing my old trucks sitting on the desk by my door instead of being on my skateboard.

Gabe Morford took the photo.

Auby Taylor #2.

Texas style vert.

I enjoy watching the ramp clips Auby releases. He's put in the time and effort to learn proper vertical skateboarding from the 1980s.

One thing I noticed when getting together this batch of scans is how so many companies aren't running print ads any longer. You get kind of used to seeing stuff and then you realize you only saw it online compared to how it was in previous years. It's cool that some of the distributors are running ads for smaller companies that might not have the budget for print so they can get a little exposure outside of social media circles.

Sebo Walker.

More Adidas sneakers than a plumber's got pliers.

Sebo is from Salem, Oregon. He became sponsored by Krooked in 2014 and turned pro for them later on down the road. At one point he was living in his custom modified van, but has since settled into an apartment. He makes and sells custom grip tape drawings, too. His part in Lakai's The Flare is set to a vintage Beastie Boy's tune and features plenty of street skating with flips and shove-its. He also hits up the transitions. Sebo doesn't overdo the ledge tech and has a refined style so that the added flip or shove-it makes the trick better and not awkward. He recently left Lakai for Adidas. His other sponsors include Indy, Spitfire, and Mob Grip.

Leo Romero #5.

No shoelaces.

Leo rips up the streets as was recently documented in Thrasher for an Independent Trucks tour article and video about a trip to Australia. I like the plain pale green board with just the Toy Machine monster sticker.

So does Leo not wear shoelaces? I've been wondering about this for a while now. It doesn't seem very practical for the tricks he does. This is a screen grab from the video and it sure looks like he doesn't. Can anybody out there confirm this one way or the other?

Alex Olson #5.

One down, two to go.

I dig that frontside ollie photo. That's the reason why I picked this one out.

I got my copy of Album, the new Etnies video, the other day and watched some of it last night. That Chris Joslin fellow is super good.

There's a cool interview with Dan Wolfe up at the Chrome Ball Incident. I was a little surprised that people had issues with Closure. It's a nice video that collects a whole lot of footage that maybe wasn't readily available elsewhere when Dan released it. Also those Girl and Lakai tour videos are fun stuff. I kind of wish that was the direction they had gone with for the proper full length vids Crailtap made in the years ahead.

Danny Sargent #5.

Proper style for frontside sliders.

It's always cool when old pros from our youth pop up in random ads doing a sick trick.

I'm guessing Lipstick Skateboards is based in either Oregon or California somewhere. I couldn't find an address, but from their Instagram, it looks like the riders travel a lot or live in different places. The company was started in 2016. The team includes Travis Willis, Neil Heddings, Aaron Roney, Bob Anderson, Kenny Ufford, Doug Korfhagen, Peter McClelland, and Tommy Cuba.

Marcelo Duarte was the photographer.

Tiago Lemos.

Over the keeper's head.

Tiago is from Jaguariúna, Brazil. Nothing against the rail stomping of Jamie Foy, but Tiago probably should have won SOTY for 2017. He took classic technical street skateboarding to new heights and distances, usually from flatground to ledges that are out of the reaches of mortals. Or even a bunch of pros. His trick selection is pretty much flawless, too. He rides for Boulevard, Independent, and Andale Bearings.

Jamie Foy.

Pink Shirt.

Jamie is from Deerfield Beach, Florida. His first ad for Deathwish was in February of 2017. By the end of the year, he turned pro and earned Thrasher's Skater of the Year award. His other sponsors include Diamond Footwear, Spitfire, Thunder, Shake Junt, and Island Water Sports. When Jamie was a little kid and skating in jam style contests, his mom suggested he wear a brighter colored shirt to stand out from the crowd. He picked pink and ran with that for a couple of years. The guy skates some huge rails and gaps, which is how he got to be SOTY.
